Keep Breathing, Netflix's latest thriller series has endured some critical criticism despite Stranger Things, The Sea Beast, and The Gray Man. In the six-part limited series, Melissa Barrera plays Liv, a young lawyer who crashes in the Canadian wilderness and must fight for survival. Netflix's Keep Breathing hit the streaming service on July 28, but reviews have been less than enthusiastic about its familiar premise and monotonous storytelling, despite its relatively short run. According to review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb, Keep Breathing currently has a lowly 38% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a similarly disappointing 5.2 score on IMDb.

“Keep Breathing plods along, tediously unrealistic and painfully predictable, where its predecessors were innovative,” hailed the Independent, while The Guardian described the series as “a survival drama so dull you'll fall asleep.”The episodes are relatively short, with most running 30 minutes or so, but they can't quite escape the common sensation of a movie concept stretched out to almost twice as long," CNN said. While critics from Decider and Variety praised Melissa Barrera's performance, most found Keep Breathing to be a lackluster take on an old formula.

A review by IGN, for instance, said the movie was well-shot, well-acted, and well-intentioned. As for the story itself, there are so many series that have done survival genre better than this middling one."Recent trends suggest that Keep Breathing might still manage to break into Netflix's weekly top 10 rankings for a sustained period despite its less than stellar reception. Keep Breathing's easy-to-digest structure - each episode runs between 30 and 40 minutes - will inevitably work in its favor as countless critically-panned movies and TV shows have dominated Netflix's popularity charts in recent years.

Moreover, Netflix subscribers have shown that they don't care much about critics' opinions. A movie like 365 Days: This Day, for example, briefly became the streamer's most popular film despite receiving a 0% Rotten Tomatoes score. For example, Interceptor reached number one in its first week despite its label as a "terrible, horrible, no good, very bad movie."Anatomy of a Scandal surged to the top of TV's most-watched chart despite its mixed reviews.

while First Kill turned in another solid performance despite its critics' admonishments. Regardless of the series' ratings, viewers are Netflix's most important indicator of success in its current precarious state, and executives will be glad to weather Keep Breathing's critical storm if it can deliver.
