Among Netflix's original TV content are strange things, bridgerton, and squid game, which have become pop culture phenomena. However, the streaming service has also been dabbling in reality TV as of late with a fair amount of success. Well, it appears that the company is planning to add another reality show to its lineup. Interestingly, this production is a reboot of a former network television hit from the 2000s: The Mole.
There is no doubt about it, Netflix has ordered a 10-episode revival of the classic reality game show. The series will be based on the Belgian series Del Mol. There was a series created by Bart De Pauw, Michel Vanhove, Michiel Devlieger, and Tom Lenaerts.
Some may be surprised by the reboot, but speculation about a reboot began last summer after the streaming service added the first two seasons of the original series. As of right now, no details have been revealed regarding potential hosts or a release date.
In 2001, ABC premiered the first American version of the game show. It aired for five seasons before ending in 2008. The program was hosted by three media personalities: Jon Kelley, Ahmad Rashād, and Anderson Cooper. As part of the game, 12 participants would work together to add to a money pot that would be won by one contestant at the end.
As they competed in various challenges, the players were also faced with "the mole," a person who was assigned the task of thwarting their efforts to earn money. Ultimately, the winner will out the saboteur at the end of the game.
As of now, Netflix offers a pretty eclectic selection of game shows, including The Circle, Sing On, and Bullsh*t the Game Show. There is also Floor Is Lava, which released its second season earlier this summer.
There is a possibility that the newly announced Mole reboot will be a nice addition to the streaming platform and offer something comparable to the programming on offer by some broadcast television networks. Meanwhile, The Mole's former TV home has made some major content changes in the past year.
There has been a recent cancellation of a number of ABC game shows such as The Celebrity Dating Game, Card Sharks, and Alec Baldwin's Match Game. However, the alphabet network continues to present some of its most popular programs, such as The $100,000 Pyramid, Press Your Luck, and Celebrity Family Feud.
It will be interesting to see how Netflix's take on the former ABC series progresses. Even though some may find it corny today, there was something charming about it. Additionally, it was sometimes just downright entertaining. It will be interesting to see if the mega streamer is able to recapture some of the energy that made the show so unique for so long.
