The Flash's ninth season will be it's last. Season 9 of Grant Gustin's show is set to begin production in September 2022, and it will premiere on The CW at midseason in early 2023, after months of speculation. It's been nine seasons! Taking audiences on an emotional journey filled with heart, humor, and spectacle for nine years.

This is Barry Allen's last race," said The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace in a statement announcing the show's end. We are so grateful for all the amazing talent, time, and love that has gone into making this show possible each week.

As we prepare for our exciting final chapter in honor of the show's incredible legacy, I want to thank our phenomenal cast, writers, producers, and crew over the years who have made The Flash such an unforgettable experience for audiences worldwide.

"A one-year contract over a multi-year offer to return as The Flash's titular character in season 9 led to rumors that season 9 would be the show's last installment. Additionally, the actor is only expected to appear in 15 episodes next season, according to reports at the time.

However, a recent interview with Wallace revealed the show was supposed to end after season 8 on The CW. Several times, Wallace told TVLine in July 2022, they changed last season's final scene after Gustin signed a deal to continue the show.

Wallace said that the whole final scene had to be changed. "We had to rewrite it three times because when it was a series finale, we had to have a much deeper conversation with Barry and Iris about having kids soon. The scene was a lot more romantic and sexier. It was really good."

The original ending to Season 8 also featured the entire Team Flash saying their goodbyes. "Ooh, I can tease next year's Big Bad now that we've got another season? Yes, let's do it!’ Wallace explained that the final scene changed radically.

The 'Goodbye to Team Flash' group party scene was deleted as well."Despite Gustin's one-year deal to appear in The Flash's final season having a maximum of 15 episodes, season 9 will only have 13 episodes, making it the show's shortest season ever. Unfortunately, no. The Flash's ninth and final season will feature Candice Patton.

The actress proactively requested the potential time off for Patton's Iris to appear in four consecutive episodes of The Flash last season. The contract she and her team designed for season 8 allowed Patton to appear in fewer episodes, which was a failsafe in the event the border between Canada and the U.S. was closed.

She said she and her team made it clear they would be happy to appear in all 20 episodes of the season if the pandemic travel situation continued to improve. Even though that option was not exercised, Patton said they respected the decision.

The show's final season will also feature Danielle Panabaker, who plays Caitlin Snow, as a series regular. Jesse L. Martin, who portrays Joe West, will appear in as many as five episodes of season 9. If his NBC pilot, The Irrational, doesn't go forward, this number could go up.

The final season of the show will also feature Tom Cavanagh. In the same way that Frost is dead, Reverse-Flash and the Negative Reverse-Flash are also dead. That's right, they're gone. I'm pretty sure you'll see Tom Cavanagh again in season 9 since it's a comic book show," Wallace told TVLine. This is a pretty safe bet, but I won't elaborate.
