'America's Got Talent winner Grace VanderWaal talks about life after her 12th year on the show. When VanderWaal performed one of her original songs during her audition in 2016, she won the judges over. When Howie Mandel hit the golden buzzer right after her performance, she was immediately sent to the live shows since her performance not only advanced her to the next round but also sent her straight to the live shows.
In the aftermath of VanderWaal's victory on the show, he soared to stardom, releasing four albums and starring as the title character in a Disney+ original movie entitled "Stargirl," made exclusively for Disney+. Despite the success she had in her career in the early days, she said she had a little trouble with her mental health during the early stages of her fame.
In retrospect, VanderWall said, "I've suffered the mental repercussions of that growing up quite a bit," according to an interview with E! News. The biggest thing I've learned over the last couple of years has been just acknowledging your triggers and keeping yourself away from them as much as possible. Staying in your pj's all day, sitting in your chair all day; that's going to make me depressed, so let's get up and get dressed."
In addition to learning how to deal with the criticism that comes with fame, she also says she is happy that she had to deal with all the hate comments when she was starting her career because it made her realize how to deal with criticism as an adult.
In VanderWaal's words, "I feel like I've been doing this for such a long time that I've become desensitized to the hate that occurs online," he said. When I was young, I went through a lot of hate online. I am grateful that it happened to me because it prepared me for what I am going through now."
According to Simon Cowell, VanderWaal's audition is still considered one of the best in the history of the show, as he recently referred to it as one of his top five golden buzzer moments from the time he spent on the show. Even though Cowell compared VanderWaal's first audition to that of Taylor Swift, VanderWaal has made an impression as a performer as she has developed her unique style.
When VanderWaal auditioned for the show, she explained that she was a little girl who had no idea what she was doing. The way that has just changed my life is surreal. I never thought that I would be sitting here years later still working in the business; it was something I would never have dreamed of doing. It's just amazing."
